After thinking about the Toyota scandal earlier in the year I began to wonder how it all was going. I think the commercials have done a fabulous job, but that is my opinion. According to an article that I read No Such Thing as Bad Publicity the Toyota’s NASCAR was a victim of someone cheating. According to this article the Nextel Cup along with Toyota are getting more publicity and a wider audience. The article then asked the question, “Was all the stress and heartache worth it for the publicity? Is there really no such thing as bad publicity?” It is for them to decide I suppose
PR-Connection… PR and Sex Therapy April 21, 2010
Is sex therapy really becoming a way for people in the spotlight to get out of their problems?? Recently, Sandra Bulloch’s husband Jessie James was caught in affairs. Bulloch made a statement that sex therapy is a bit of a cop out for people. Is it the PR behind the people that are making them make these decision to go to sex therapy or is it actually their choice? I guess it will never be known, but I would love to hear what everyone thinks about this situation. Here is an article that addresses the situation. Sandra Bulloch Ringless
PR connections- Tiger Woods.. Still like em? April 21, 2010
For my PR connections I have chosen to reflect on some of the year’s so far because PR problems. The first PR scandal that comes to mind is golf hero Tiger Woods. His Public Relation team and how they did on the manner is certainly up for debate. The press conference seemed over rehearsed and certainly not from the heart. Everyone should check it out and decide their own opinion. No matter what Tiger did show that he can still play golf by making it into the top 5 in the Master’s tournament.

GUEST BLOGGER! April 21, 2010
This is a blog by my fellow class mate and friend Meghan Beytagh. She used some really great articles to back up what she was saying and had a lot of feedback. I think it was a great issue to share with everyone so I wanted to spread it even more! Thank Meghan for being my guest blogger and letting me use this post! And here is a link to the article!

Unpaid Internships
Many students, including myself, have to complete an internship in order to graduate. While it would be nice if all of these were paid, the reality is that pretty much all of them are unpaid. PROpenMic recently ran a post about how these unpaid internships may be illegal. PROpenMic has been against the utilization of unpaid internships since its inception. Some major publicaations have recently run articales about the controversity of business during these hard economic times using students/internships as a source of free labor . Both the Times and the New York Times reported on this issue. The New York Times Article reports on a few states that have even begun to “crack down” on companies that are not paying their interns.
PR OpenMic Benefits and Cool Features! April 21, 2010
PR OpenMic, is a social network that has many different things to offer students, faculty, and companies. It is a site that helps people communicate with within the Public Relations world and it is a nonprofit organization. I have had a PR OpenMic account since my PR Research class and have never taken the time to operate the site. After operating the site for Social Media it has come to my attention that the site offers some great opportunities for Public Relation students graduating.
The social network for one does a great job of keeping their members updated. They are constantly sending emails to inform students what is going on. Another great thing about the site is a person can join a group that updates open internships and jobs in the Public Relation field. To find this group it is easy to navigate as well. Once a person has joined and logged in there is a section for the group on the right side of the page. The website now has 6,000 members that have been recorded. This is a great way to network with others in a person’s same field. People can also find people in their area that are on PR OpenMic. There is a google map on the website so one can view the geographical area of people using the site. This is helpful if a person just graduated and wants to move somewhere people are in Public Relations they can look at good geographical areas on the map.
With PR OpenMic people can connect with people that have the same business interest as they do. It is similar to other social networking sites because a person can customize their page and add pictures. The great thing about PR OpenMic is it is really benefiting Public Relation practitioners and students when they join.
Is Social Media Monitoring Ethical? April 21, 2010
On the discussion about social media monitoring and if it is ethical one must first define ethics. What are ethics exactly? Ethics are different to each person. It could be based on how a person was raised or encounters that have occurred later in life. It is all up to a person.
With regards to social media monitoring it can I fact be ethical. People can monitor others while being extremely up front about it. If a person put something on the internet it is fair game to use this information. The stickiness of the situation arises when someone else puts something on the internet of someone. It can quickly try to be deleted by a person, but somehow it is always there haunting them on the internet. If someone is searching about information on the internet and uses a device to monitor as Raidian6 then it seems to be ethical.
When the situation turns to become something that is not ethical is when people are sneaking around the internet using false names. This is unethical in most people’s eyes because it is lying. To others it may simply be an investigation on who is about to be hired into their company.
After completing a few social media monitoring reports myself for PR Reseach and Social Media I was as if I was doing nothing wrong. I would set up google alerts and search sites as twitter and facebook or fan pages or not s fan pages. I was researching what people were saying about certain companies. People would the information on the internet so using it was not unethical. The unethical part once again is when people portray themselves as someone or something different on the internet in order t complete social monitoring. The question is really unanswered. In my opinion there are so many different items on the internet today that someone must monitor them, but it is the way a person does this and what their ethics are that make social media monitoring ethical or not.
Entertainment from Mann April 21, 2010
Learning from Mann
- After watching the video with Kneale Mann it seems as if he has a lot of energy and positive things that he knows and wants to share about social media. He seems like he would be the right person to be in contact with because he seems to have his hand in a little bit of everything. What I learned from the interview is how he claims to have been doing social media his whole career. This surprised me because it seems as if social media is a new thing on the market that everyone is going crazy about. This could go back to a prior blog post when we were asked to define social media in 140 characters or less. Social media can be different to all people. As Professor Nixon stated in the video, “People have always been social.” This is true. Social media is what people make it. Mann also talked about the change in Public Relations and how it has changed with the social media. On this subject he always discussed an overlap in the two. I also learned how people need to appreciate all the activities that come with Public Relations. Before I began this class I had never blogged before. Now I have a new appreciation for blogging and this is how it should be. From Mann I learned even if something is new or unfamiliar in Public Relations a person must respect the application.
Learn more from Mann
- What I would have wanted to know more about from Mann was something that he mentioned in the introduction. In the introduction he mentioned people question what to do if one would like a facebook page, but is working for a company. I would like to go more in detail with this subject because I am facing that problem.
Surprised by Mann
- What surprised my from the interview was the claim that from blogging a person can become a better writer. People think a blog is just something that a person can share what they are feeling at the time. A blog really can create a place to share information on important issues and according to Mann really improve a person’s writing skills.
